Description: It is easily identified by it’s massively-ridged dark gray/brown bark. The leaves are 12-20cm long and 6-10cm broad, shallowly lobed with 10–15 rounded lobes on each margin. In may they have flowers that are either yellow or bright red. Their acorns appear in pairs, ranging from 1 inch to almost two inches.


Habitat: This species is a predominant ridge-top tree in eastern North American hardwood forests. It is also found to have grown on rocks and boulders.
